Animation school

France

Address:

Université Paris 8, 2 Rue de la Liberté, Saint-Denis, France

The French public university route into computer-generated imagery, founded in 1984.

Recruitment is explicitly split into one third artistic profiles, one third computer scientists and one third mixed. This does not only train animators but tool developers, technical directors and researchers. The programme centres on the algorithmic foundations of CGI, production tools for animation, VFX and games, and emerging technologies. The department is attached to the INREV-AIAC research laboratory, which feeds directly into teaching.

The course is geared toward the technical side, R&D and research rather than studio character animation.

Entry is at two years of higher education, not straight from secondary school. The full path runs three years, final undergraduate year then two master years. Selection is very tight: a compulsory portfolio, any incomplete application automatically rejected, and the department reports an acceptance rate below 1 % for direct master entry. Around thirty students admitted.

National degrees from Université Paris 8, the most legally solid recognition on this list. RECA member. Around €120 for the undergraduate year and €170 per master year.
