Calarts
Animation school
USA
Address:
24700 McBean Pkwy, Santa Clarita, CA 91355, USA
The historic global benchmark for character animation. The school's DNA is drawing and storytelling rather than software technique, and the entry bar is observational drawing more than Maya proficiency.
The BFA Character Animation signature is one individual short film a year for four years, which builds the graduating portfolio. The progression: fundamentals in year one, dialogue and sound in year two, traditional or CG specialisation in year three, a tailored programme in year four.
The application is heavy and thoroughly documented: a two-part portfolio with at least fifteen observational works then creative pieces, an artist statement, an introduction video, two letters of recommendation, and a video flip-through of a complete sketchbook. Transfer students enter in year one regardless of prior credits.
Tuition: $62,954 for 2026-2027, with announced increases of 4 to 5 % a year, housing on top.
