Emily Carr University of art and design

Animation school
Canada
Address:
520 East 1st Avenue, Vancouver, BC, Canada
The only North American public art university on this list, and the only course where 3D animation sits inside a four-year university art and design degree rather than a vocational programme.
The structure is explicit: an exploratory Foundation Year shared across art, design and media, then three years of the 3D Computer Animation major, with an optional minor. That compulsory shared year and the minor option produce a broader, more artistic profile than a pure studio course.
The course therefore covers a broader field than animation alone, with later specialisation than at a studio school.
The school is located in Vancouver, one of the three major North American VFX and animation hubs alongside Montreal and Los Angeles.
The programme page attaches the major to a Bachelor of Design, while third-party aggregators list it as a Bachelor of Media Arts.
Around CA$7,068 a year for domestic students and around CA$31,214 for international students in 2026-2027, compulsory fees included, with announced increases of 2 % and up to 6 % a year.
