Filmakademie Baden Wurttemberg
Animation school
Germany
Address:
Akademiehof 10, Ludwigsburg, Germany
Probably the best prestige-to-cost ratio in the world in this field: free for a first degree if you are an EU national, €1,500 per semester for non-EU students.
The institute runs FMX, the international conference on animation, visual effects and interactive media, which draws around 4,000 attendees from 60 countries a day. For a student that is direct access to recruiters and to the speakers from the major studios, and it has no equivalent.
The Film + Media course offers five specialisations: Animation with three tracks, Animation Director, Concept Artist and Character Animator, then Visual Effects, Technical Directing, Animation/Effects Producing and Interactive Media. The Technical Directing track is a rarity, very few schools train explicitly for that job, and it is taught entirely in English.
Around 4.5 years in total, with lateral entry possible straight into Project Studies. Applications before 15 February, compulsory entrance exam, and 12 months of relevant practical experience required. Winter semester intake only.
The qualification is a Filmakademie Diplom, not a conventional university degree. Graduation films are regularly awarded, including at the Student Academy Awards.
