National Film and Television School

Animation school

UK

Address:

National Film and Television School (NFTS), Station Rd, Beaconsfield, UK

The NFTS's real asset is cross-department collaboration: your animated film is made with student producers, editors, composers and sound designers from the same school. That is a genuine studio set-up, and very few institutions offer it.

Two very different paths coexist. The MFA Directing Animation runs two years and aims at authorial directing. The MA Animation for Film and Games runs one year, also covers games, and is a shorter entry point. Choose according to your project.

The school is postgraduate only, with around 700 students a year across all departments. Production costs and equipment are included in the fees, which is far from trivial when you are making a film. Digital Animation Lab accessible 24 hours a day. Maya, Blender, Houdini, ZBrush, Unreal Engine, Nuke, Adobe.

Admission is on application and interview. A university degree is the usual profile, but the school explicitly accepts candidates without one if they present a convincing portfolio. On-campus attendance is compulsory.

BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema in 2018 and a Queen's Anniversary Prize. Those awards relate to the school across all departments.

MA Animation, 2027 entry: £14,450 for UK and EU students with Settlement Status, £22,450 for international students, for the entire course.
