Royal College of Art
Animation school
UK
Address:
South Kensington, London SW7 2EU, UK
An authorial school rather than a pipeline school. The MA Animation is built on a practice-as-research approach: experimentation, critique, hybridising analogue and digital, from classical drawing to stop-motion, motion capture and XR. The course includes no production-oriented Maya technical strand.
One year, 45 weeks full time, 180 credits. The admission portfolio asks for up to three animated projects, with a preference for complete films and a ten-minute combined maximum, five-page research documents per project, a 300-word personal statement and a two-minute motivation video. The prerequisite is explicit: technical mastery already acquired.
Collaborations with Aardman Academy, Studio AKA and Nexus Studios. A British public university, postgraduate only, with Oscar-nominated alumni.
£16,050 a year for UK students in 2026-2027, £40,750 for international and EU students. IELTS 6.5 minimum.
