The animation workshop VIA University college

Animation school
Danmark
Address:
Kasernevej 5, 8800 Viborg, Danmark
The teaching progression is what really sets this school apart, and it is rare: the first year is spent entirely on traditional 2D animation to build fundamentals, the second on mastering 3D, the third on portfolio, a ten-week placement in a professional studio and the bachelor thesis.
That 2D base before 3D is a substantive argument if you are working on your sense of movement. Many schools have dropped the step.
The Character Animation bachelor runs three years and three months. Two other bachelors exist, Graphic Storytelling and Computer Graphic Arts, plus foundation courses, summer schools and an artist residency programme.
Selection is on talent rather than school record: a compulsory admission test and programme-specific portfolio requirements, with drawing and storytelling quality as the deciding criteria. Deadline 15 March, intake in August.
Teachers from Disney, Aardman and the BBC, a multinational cohort, teaching in English.
It is free for EU and EEA nationals. Fees apply to others subject to eligibility conditions.
